Sanitation – a basic necessity.
Latrines in use at the many of our schools are in a very poor condition. The Link is considering how these can be improved. In theory the government is responsible for them but in practice there is very little money for this and most rural schools only have access to water inside the school or from a well in the grounds. The latrines are vulnerable to vandalism and unauthorised use outside of school hours. If there is a door, the lock does not work – it is not easy being a girl at school and the conditions encourage diarrhoea and illness in boys and girls – not good for school attendance.
